Dog pee smell
Old Dog Urine in Carpet: 4 Situations and the Fix for Each
Quick answer
Getting dog urine smell out of carpet depends on how far it soaked and what you've already tried. Fresh spots need blot, rinse and enzyme to pad depth. Old spots need rinsing and extracting first. Spots that return after two full rounds may be in the pad.
- Four situations cover most carpet spots: fresh, dried or old, already treated, and soaked into the pad.
- The core method is the same: remove, rinse if needed, soak to pad depth, cover, dry and check.
- If vinegar, shampoo or steam was used, rinse and extract thoroughly before the enzyme cleaner.
- The smell back after two full rounds, or a glowing patch bigger than a dinner plate, points to the pad.
- Odor can be fixed, but old dye damage may be permanent.
Getting dog urine smell out of carpet depends on how far the urine soaked and what you’ve already put on it. Match your spot to one of the four situations below before you buy anything. Each has its own starting point.
Which carpet situation is yours?
| Situation | Start here |
|---|---|
| A. Fresh accident | Blot, rinse, then enzyme to pad depth |
| B. Dried or old stain | Rinse and extract, then enzyme |
| C. Already treated | Rinse and extract thoroughly first |
| D. Soaked into the pad | Check the pad and subfloor |

A and C: fresh accidents and spots you already treated
For a fresh accident, blot with white paper towels, rinse with a little cool water and extract, then soak with enzymatic cleaner. Acting fast prevents most long-term odor.
If you’ve already used vinegar, shampoo or steam, rinse and extract thoroughly first, or use an oxidizing pet cleaner, then apply the enzyme cleaner. Old cleaner residue weakens enzymes. Never use steam, bleach, or dishwasher or laundry detergent on carpet.
B: how to get dog urine smell out of carpet when it is old
- Rinse and extract. Use cool water, with 2 wet passes and 2 dry passes.
- Optional stain lift. On synthetic carpet, blot on 1/4 teaspoon (about 1 ml) of clear dish liquid, with no bleach or lanolin, in 1 cup (240 ml) of lukewarm water. Rinse with warm water and repeat while color transfers. Don’t over-wet. This lifts stains but does not remove odor.
- Test a hidden patch. Inside a closet works well.
- Soak with enzyme. Go to the depth the urine went, plus 2 inches (5 cm) past the visible edge.
- Cover. Lay plastic or a damp towel loosely on top for the label’s dwell time.
- Dry under weighted towels. Cover the spot with a 1/2-inch (1 cm) layer of paper towels and weight it with something heavy that won’t bleed color. Change the towels often.
- Re-scan after 24 to 48 hours. Use a blacklight and your nose. Repeat once if needed.
Never mix cleaning products, and keep bleach away from anything on this list.
D: what if it soaked into the pad?
Suspect the pad if the smell is back after two full rounds, the carpet feels damp or crunchy, or a glowing patch is bigger than a dinner plate. These signs are our rule of thumb. Climb the repair ladder only as far as you need: one more round, then replacing the stained pad section, then treating the subfloor.
To replace pad, pull back the carpet from the nearest corner with pliers, replace the stained section and treat the subfloor before re-laying. If you rent, photograph before and after and ask your landlord before cutting anything.
Will it come out?
Always test on a hidden patch first, and treat both sides of an area rug, then clean the floor beneath it. Here is what to expect:
- Odor: usually yes, with enzyme to pad depth and a full dry.
- Fresh stain: usually yes.
- Old color change (red, yellow or orange marks): often no. Urine can strip carpet dye, so the odor can be fixed while the dye damage may be permanent.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get old dog urine out of carpet?
Rinse with cool water and extract, using 2 wet passes and 2 dry passes. Then soak with enzymatic cleaner to pad depth, cover it for the label's dwell time, and dry fully under weighted towels.
Will old dog urine stains come out of carpet?
Odor usually can be fixed with enzyme to pad depth and a full dry. Old color changes in red, yellow or orange often can't, because urine can strip carpet dye.
What if I already used vinegar, shampoo or steam?
Rinse and extract thoroughly first, or use an oxidizing pet cleaner, then apply the enzyme cleaner. Old residue weakens enzymes.
How do I know if urine soaked into the carpet pad?
Signs include the smell returning after two full enzyme rounds, a damp or crunchy carpet, swollen boards, or a glowing patch bigger than a dinner plate. These checks are our rule of thumb.
Can I use a steam cleaner on old dog urine?
No. Heat bonds proteins into synthetic fibers and sets the stain and odor.
