3-Ingredient Frozen Puppy Teething Treats (No Xylitol)

By the Wagwise team · Updated · 3 min read

Quick answer

Frozen puppy teething treats can be as simple as three ingredients: soaked kibble, pure pumpkin and a little peanut butter, packed in a rubber toy. The key rule is the label. Peanut butter must contain no xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

Frozen puppy teething treats do not need a long ingredient list. Three simple foods, packed in a soft rubber toy, give sore gums something cold to work on. The one non-negotiable rule is the label: check every jar for xylitol before it goes near your puppy.

Why do frozen puppy teething treats need a label check?

Xylitol is toxic to dogs, and it can appear in peanut butter. Low blood sugar can start within 10 to 60 minutes of eating it. A safe jar lists peanuts, and maybe salt, and nothing else. If you see xylitol, or any sweetener you do not recognize, put the jar back.

Also check every food for onion, garlic and salt.

What are the 3 ingredients?

The Frozen Breakfast Toy uses three foods plus warm water to soak the kibble:

Ingredient Amount Label check
Kibble One quarter of a normal meal Your puppy’s usual food
Pure pumpkin puree 1 tbsp (15 g) Not pie filling
Peanut butter 1 tsp (5 g) No xylitol

How to make a frozen breakfast toy

  1. Soak. Cover the kibble with warm water for 10 to 15 minutes. Drain.
  2. Mix. Stir in the pumpkin.
  3. Pack. Press the mixture into a soft rubber stuffable toy.
  4. Seal. Close the large opening with the peanut butter.
  5. Freeze. Freeze for at least 4 hours or overnight. Make 3 at a time.

Because it uses part of your puppy’s meal, it counts as food, not an extra. It also helps a wound-up puppy settle in the pen at nap time.

How to serve frozen treats safely

Want a recipe with no peanut butter? The pumpkin and banana lick mat needs only pumpkin, banana and water. Read the pumpkin lick mat recipe.

What should never go in a puppy treat?

Never use xylitol (check nut butters), grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, chives, chocolate, coffee, macadamia nuts, raw dough, alcohol, salty stock cubes, cooked bones, or fruit seeds, pits and rinds. Skip flavored yogurt, canned fruit in syrup and pumpkin pie filling too, because of sweeteners, sugar and spices.

Foods that are fine in small amounts include pure pumpkin puree, banana, blueberries, strawberries, seedless watermelon (no rind), cucumber, cored apple, carrots and plain green beans. Introduce each one on its own, in a small amount, and count it as part of the day’s food.

What if my puppy eats something unsafe?

Call your vet straight away. In the US you can also call ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 (a fee may apply). In the UK, Australia and Europe, call your vet or nearest emergency vet. Save the number in your phone today.

Teething drives chewing on objects, while biting people is mostly play, so treats help gums but do not fix hand biting alone. The full guide has the biting plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is peanut butter safe for puppies?

Only if the label shows no xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to dogs and can appear in peanut butter. The ingredients list should be peanuts, and maybe salt, and nothing else.

What are the signs of xylitol poisoning?

Low blood sugar can start within 10 to 60 minutes of eating it. If your puppy eats anything with xylitol, call your vet straight away.

Can I give my puppy a hard frozen block?

No. Serve frozen food inside a rubber toy or on a lick mat, never as a hard block, and let it sit for 5 minutes first so it softens slightly.

How many treats can my puppy have?

Count treats as part of the day's food. Amounts here are for a puppy of 11 to 33 lb (5 to 15 kg), so halve them for toy breeds.
