Dog Food Trial Made Simple: A 12-Week Tracker
Quick answer
Choosing dog food for skin allergies is a job for your vet. A strict elimination diet trial is the reliable check, usually 8 to 12 weeks, and a 12-week tracker keeps everyone honest. Log only the trial food, a weekly itch score, stools and any slips.
- Only start a food trial with your vet. Your vet chooses the diet and the length.
- A trial is one bowl, one food, measured. Treats, chews and flavored medicines can spoil it.
- Many dogs start to improve around week 5, so keep going. A recheck is usually around week 8.
- A slip is not failure. Write it down and tell your vet.
Dog food for skin allergies is a decision for you and your vet, not a guess. The reliable way to check for food allergy is a strict elimination diet trial, usually 8 to 12 weeks, and a clear log makes it far easier. This is a tracker to use alongside your vet’s plan.
What does a 12-week dog food trial look like?
Your vet chooses the diet and the length. Here is the usual outline.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Week 0 | Prepare. Agree the diet and treats with your vet. |
| Weeks 1 to 4 | Trial diet only. The itch may not change yet. That is normal. |
| Week 5 onward | Many dogs start to improve. Keep going. |
| Week 8 | Vet recheck. |
| Up to week 12 | If your vet extends the trial. |
| Challenge | Only as your vet directs. |

What should you do in week 0?
- Write “Everything My Dog Eats”: main food, treats, chews, toothpaste, flavored medicines, supplements and table scraps. Your vet can then avoid proteins your dog has had before.
- Ask about flavored parasite preventives and medicines. Your vet may suggest unflavored versions.
- Agree allowed treats with your vet, such as pieces of the trial food itself.
- Clear cupboards of old treats and chews.
- Brief everyone: kids, visitors and dog walkers.
What goes in the weekly tracker?
For each week of the trial, keep one row:
- Daily tick. Only the trial diet was eaten.
- Weekly itch score. The average of your seven evening scores.
- Stool score. From 1 (hard) to 5 (very loose).
- Slip notes. What was eaten, and when.
Hidden proteins to check. These can quietly ruin a trial, so clear each one with your vet:
- Treats and training treats
- Chews and dental sticks
- Pill pockets and pet toothpaste
- Flavored medicines and parasite preventives
- Supplements
- Table scraps and dropped food
- Other pets’ bowls
What can happen at the week 8 recheck?
| Outcome | What may happen next |
|---|---|
| Clearly better | Your vet plans the challenge phase |
| Partly better | Your vet may extend the trial to 12 weeks |
| No change | Your vet may try a second diet or look at other causes |
In a challenge, signs usually return within 1 to 3 days of re-feeding if food allergy is involved, but it can take up to 4 weeks. Only do this as your vet directs.
How do you handle slips and keep the household on board?
Slips happen. Write down what was eaten and when, keep going with the trial diet and tell your vet. They decide whether to extend. One slip is not failure. Hiding it is the only real mistake.
Everyone who feeds or walks your dog needs to know the rules. Put a sign on the fridge, tell visitors, and keep one measured bowl of the trial food. Ask your vet which treats are allowed, and keep those in a clearly marked container so no one guesses.
Why involve your vet at every step? Itch usually has more than one cause, so fleas, mites and skin infection can mimic or add to food allergy. Ask your vet to check those too, and keep year-round flea control going for every pet. The full itchy dog guide includes the vet-guided food trial companion and a printable log.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a dog food trial last?
Veterinary guidelines describe 8 to 12 weeks. Your vet sets the length and may extend it at the recheck.

Hidden proteins in treats, chews, dental sticks, pill pockets, toothpaste, flavored medicines, supplements, table scraps and other pets' bowls.
